Best Scalloped Potatoes

A creamy and cheesy side dish that is a classic comfort food, perfect for family dinners and holiday meals.

  • 6 large potatoes
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Peel and thinly slice the potatoes using a mandoline slicer or a sharp knife.
  3. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
  4. Stir in the flour, salt, and black pepper to make a roux. Cook for about 1 minute.
  5. Gradually whisk in the milk until the sauce is smooth and thickened, about 5 minutes.
  6. Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the cheddar and Parmesan cheeses until melted.
  7. Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish.
  8. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes.
  9. Repeat with the remaining potatoes and cheese sauce.
  10. Sprinkle the bread crumbs evenly over the top of the potatoes.
  11. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 1 hour.
  12. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 30 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.
  13. Let the scalloped potatoes rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For extra flavor, consider adding garlic powder or herbs to the cheese sauce, and experiment with different cheeses for a twist.
