Black Forest Trifle

A festive layered dessert with chocolate cake, cherries, pudding, and whipped cream that’s perfect for holiday celebrations.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box of chocolate cake mix (or 1 homemade chocolate cake)
  • 1 cup heavy cream (for whipping)
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups canned or fresh cherries (pitted, with juice or syrup)
  • 1/4 cup cherry juice (from the canned cherries or fresh)
  • 2 cups vanilla pudding (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate shavings (or grated chocolate)
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder (optional for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Bake the chocolate cake according to the instructions on the box or your homemade recipe. Let it cool completely, then cut it into small cubes.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whip the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until soft peaks form. Set aside.
  3. If using canned cherries, drain them and keep some juice. If using fresh cherries, pit them and mix with 1/4 cup of cherry juice.
  4. In a large trifle bowl or individual cups, layer the ingredients: start with a layer of chocolate cake cubes, then add a layer of cherries, followed by vanilla pudding and whipped cream. Repeat until finished with whipped cream on top.
  5. Cover the trifle and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight if possible, to allow flavors to blend.

Notes

For a richer flavor, substitute chocolate pudding for vanilla and consider adding extra cherries or drizzling chocolate syrup for decoration.
