Description
A warm, sweet Christmas Bread filled with dried fruit and mild spices, perfect for any holiday table.
Ingredients
Scale
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup warm milk
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup dried fruit (such as cranberries, raisins, or currants)
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/4 cup slivered almonds (optional)
Instructions
- In a small bowl, mix warm milk and yeast. Let sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
- In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- Add the yeast mixture, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth.
- Fold in the dried fruit and nuts, if using.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours or until doubled in size.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Punch down the dough, shape it into a loaf, and place it in a greased bread pan. Let it rise again for about 30-45 minutes.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Allow to cool before slicing.
Notes
For best results, let the dough rise in a warm, draft-free place. Brush the top with melted butter after baking for extra shine.
