Old-Fashioned Swiss Steak

A comforting and hearty dish made with tender steak and rich tomato sauce, perfect for family gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds round steak
  • 1 cup flour
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 can diced tomatoes (14.5 ounces)
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • Fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Cut the round steak into serving-sized pieces and pound the flour, salt, and pepper into the meat.
  2. In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat.
  3. Brown the steak pieces on both sides, then remove the meat and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, add the chopped onion and garlic, and cook until softened.
  5. Pour in the diced tomatoes and beef broth, and stir in the bell pepper, Worcestershire sauce, and paprika.
  6. Return the steak to the skillet, cover, and simmer on low heat for 1.5 to 2 hours or until the meat is tender.
  7. Serve hot, garnished with fresh parsley.

Notes

For extra flavor, marinate the steak in your favorite seasonings for a few hours before cooking. You can also mix a tablespoon of cornstarch with water to thicken the sauce if desired.
