Scale
- 3 large Granny Smith apples, peeled and finely diced
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter
- 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons cold water
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Step 1: Dice Apples – Peel, core, and dice the fruit into small, uniform cubes for even distribution.
- Step 2: Melt Butter – Place a large skillet over medium heat and melt the butter until bubbling.
- Step 3: Sauté Fruit – Add the diced apples to the skillet and cook for 5 minutes until slightly softened.
- Step 4: Add Spices – Stir in the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves until the apples are well coated.
- Step 5: Prepare Slurry – Whisk the cornstarch and water together in a small bowl until smooth.
- Step 6: Thicken Filling – Pour the slurry into the skillet and stir for 2 minutes until the sauce is thick and syrupy.
- Step 7: Add Flavor – Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
- Step 8: Cool Filling – Allow the mixture to cool completely before spreading it onto your cinnamon roll dough.
Notes
Using Granny Smith apples provides the best tartness to balance the sugar, but Honeycrisp is a great alternative for more sweetness.
