Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb (450g) lean ground beef
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 tbsp chili powder
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1/2 tsp paprika
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)
- 1/2 tsp salt, or to taste
- 1/4 tsp black pepper, or to taste
- 1/4 tsp sugar
- 12 hard taco shells
- 2 cups shredded iceberg lettuce
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 large tomato, diced
- 1/2 cup sour cream (optional)
Instructions
- Step 1: Brown Beef – In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef, breaking it up with a spoon, for 5-7 minutes until fully cooked.
- Step 2: Drain Fat – Carefully drain any excess fat from the cooked ground beef.
- Step 3: Season Beef – Reduce heat to medium. Add water, chili powder, cumin, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, black pepper, and sugar to the skillet with the beef. Stir well to combine.
- Step 4: Simmer Meat – Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for 5-8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until most of the liquid has been absorbed and the beef is richly flavored.
- Step 5: Prep Toppings – While the beef simmers, prepare your toppings. Shred the lettuce, dice the tomato, and shred the cheese if not pre-shredded.
- Step 6: Warm Shells – Preheat oven or microwave according to hard taco shell package instructions. Warm the taco shells for 3-5 minutes until crisp.
- Step 7: Assemble Tacos – Hold a warm taco shell open and fill the bottom with a generous spoonful of the seasoned ground beef.
- Step 8: Add Toppings – Top the beef with shredded lettuce, shredded cheddar cheese, and diced tomatoes.
- Step 9: Serve – For an authentic experience, add a dollop of sour cream if desired. Serve your homemade Taco Bell crunchy tacos immediately.
Notes
For an extra kick, add a dash of your favorite hot sauce. You can also toast your taco shells in a dry skillet for 1-2 minutes per side for maximum crispness.
